Josh and I got to take a fun weekend trip to Denver to see our friends, the Tippetts, as a surprise for his birthday. I had planned everything, even his two days off from work, without his notice. It was killing me to be keeping the secret for so long (about a month!), but the surprise on Josh's face was SO worth it! I let Leslie know my plans in advance, and she kept the secret from Joe as well. Josh and Joe became fast friends during the three years we spent in law school, and they share a birthday, so it was a perfect gift.
We hadn't seen Joe and Leslie for about five years, and it was really great to see them. Talking and eating and movies. Going out and staying in. Yummy red velvet cake that was on fire with candles. More talking into the wee hours and cute Elle and Tommy and Sosh. All the fabulous exhibits at the Denver Art Museum and staying a night at a great hotel.Could have used a bit more sunshine and a bit less of a delay at the airport, but overall the trip was perfect. We left the kids in the capable hands of Luke and Mary Alley, and when we got back, the first thing Caleb said to me in the morning was, "I'm glad you're back, but I liked the babysitters a little bit more." I'll take that as a sign that the weekend went well on this end, too.
