request and dedication

I heard a song as I was driving the other day that made me think of my little sister, and I wished that I could make her listen to it with me. Sure, I could call her up and tell her to go find it and listen, or I could email her a link, but better than all of that would be to send her an old-school dedication, radio-style. Think Casey Kasem (the Ryan Seacrest of my youth). It would go something like this:

"Our letter this week reads, 'Dear Casey. My sister is my best friend. We've shared a lot of laughter, and supported each other through the good and the bad. But now, it's not so easy. You see, my sister doesn't live nearby anymore. She's in Florida. Casey, I've never even been to Florida. I know she's happy, and I'm happy, too, but I sure do miss her. So, Casey, It would mean a lot if you would play Happy by Brandi Carlile for my sister in Florida.'

'Well, Tami, here's your request [dramatic pause] and dedication....'"

Or, maybe you're a fan of Delilah (and who am I to judge?):

"Welcome back to the Delilah show, is this Tami?"

"Yes."

"Hi, Tami. Thank you for calling in. How can I help you share some love tonight?"

"Well, I was just missing my sister. She lives in Florida and I'm in Idaho, and I don't get to see her very often."

"And phone calls just aren't the same as a warm embrace or a laugh shared in person, are they."

"Um, no...no they're not."

"I have just the song to let her know you're thinking of her, so many miles away. The Power of Love by Celine Dion."

"Actually, I had something else in mind. I'd like you to play Happy by Brandi Carlile. There's a line that says, 'I'm happy, can't you see/I'm alright, but I miss you Amberlee. It makes me think of her."

"That's not very powerful or tear-inducing. And I'm not sure I even have that song. Who's Brandi Carlile?"

"You've got it. Will you please play it for me, Delilah?"

"What's your sister's name?"

"Emily."

"But she's not saying 'Emily' she's saying 'Amberlee.'"

"I know, but if you don't know that, it really sounds like she's singing 'Emily.'"

"I'm not sure I can support that kind of deception. Just let me play Wind Beneath my Wings. She'll love it."

"No, Delilah, that really doesn't apply. I'd like you to play Happy."

"Well, I am really inspired by your story of devotion and courage. Tell me again about how you overcame all odds to find each other, even after you were born twins but separated at birth and raised 2,000 miles apart, and remain friends through thick and thin."

"Um, I never said any of that, and actually she's four years younger than me..."

"It's a beautiful story. So, for your sister and all sisters out there, here's You're the Inspiration by Chicag-"

"DELILAH!!"

"Alright! Here's Happy. For Emily."

(Who knew Delilah was so confrontational?)

Great post!! Love the song as well. I don't have any sisters (the kind born by your own mother) but have some amazing women in my life that I would call my "sisters".

Alright, not fair to make me cry a thousand miles away. I don't even know your sister! But I miss mine too, so I share your pain :o)

By the way, I loved your "Delilah" interpretation... once again I'm laughing by myself... out loud!:o)
Miss you :o) Loved the music too, where do you find such great artists?

You slay me. And luckily, I am one of those people who would know Casey's voice ANYWHERE :)

Tam this post made me so sad! Really! I miss you too, all the time, and it's usually for the silly things. Like going to look for Fall leaves, or listening to some new rad music, or after I've done something really stupid and I know you'd appreciate it. Yeah - that happens a lot. I can't wait to see you over Christmas!!

Tam, you made me laugh and cry at the same time. It's hard being so far from sisters!

So your totally stealing my song huh???
I remember posting about the song Happy when you first mentioned Brandi Carlile- love it!!

Yes, Amber, you did mention it before. But I already knew it, so I wasn't stealing :)

And, to be fair, it does remind me of you, too, since it DOES say Amberlee, after all. :)

haha- I was just messin' with you Tami, I'll happily share :)

BTW- I drove past your old house the other day and it's still for sale. I was shocked by that! Oh and I want the playground in your backyard :)

Amber, our house was bought by Josh's company and now they're the ones trying to sell it, so it's out of our hands. :) But, yes, I'm shocked that it's been for sale for so long. (part of it is that the realtors are terrible).

You should have told me about the swingset...I would have given it to you before we closed on the house!
